Royal Mail have extended the time that the old, non-barcoded, stamps can be used on mail until 31st July 2023. After 31st July only the new barcoded stamps can be used.

Royal Mail had been encouraging customers to use their non-barcoded stamps before 31st January 2023. On 17th November Royal Mail confirmed that they have decided to introduce a six-month grace period, starting from the original deadline of 31st January 2023, where non-barcoded definitive stamps will still be delivered as normal.

Non-barcoded stamps can be exchanged for the new barcoded version through Royal Mail’s ‘Swap Out’ scheme. Customers will be able send unused stamps via a Freepost address and forms to do this will be available via a variety of channels, including local Customer Service Points, the Royal Mail website.

Customers will not be out of pocket as there is no end date as to when customers can swap their non-barcoded stamps by. The process of swapping out is free and Royal Mail are sending a leaflet and a swap out form to all 31 million UK addresses.

Launch of new digital stamps

Royal Mail announced in July 2022 that it is adding unique barcodes to all its definitive stamps – that is, everyday stamps featuring the iconic profile of the Monarch.

The move is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing modernisation drive, and comes following a successful national trial. These unique QR codes ( a two-dimensional variety of barcodes) will facilitate operational efficiencies, enable the introduction of added security features and pave the way for innovative services for customers.

The new barcoded stamps will have a “digital twin” and the two will be connected by the Royal Mail App. The barcodes match the stamp colour and sit alongside the main body of the stamp, separated by a simulated perforation line.

Rollout of new digital stamps

Customers will still be able to use their non-barcoded Definitive and Christmas stamps until 31 January 2023 – non-bar-coded stamps are no longer valid as postage after this date.

6 October 2022 – off sale date for non-barcoded stamps: Royal Mail are asking retailers not to sell non-barcoded stamps to customers after this date. Retailers: If you still have non-barcoded stock on 6th October – you’ll be able to access an exchange scheme.

Scan the App for an exclusive video featuring Shaun the Sheep

Recipients of mail featuring a barcoded stamp can watch an exclusive video by scanning the stamps in the Royal Mail App. The video features Shaun the Sheep and has been created for Royal Mail by the British animation studio, Aardman.

Shaun The Sheep features in the first video watchable by scanning the new QR Code on Stamps.

The video is the first in a series of planned videos to be released during 2022 that will allow customers sending stamped mail to choose which video the recipient can see when they receive an item of mail. Royal Mail press releases are highlighting these digital cards as fun for birthday card sending.

Definitive stamps

Definitive stamps are the regular ‘everyday’ stamps featuring the profile of HM The Queen created by the sculptor Arnold Machin. The design has changed very little since it was introduced in June 1967. The image has become one of the most iconic pieces of artwork in the world and has been reproduced in excess of 175 billion times.
