Black History Month: Why It Matters for Publishers and Retailers

Sep 30, 2024 | Diversity and Inclusion

As a Black Council member of the Greeting Card Association, I am dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the greeting card industry. It is important to me that our industry reflects the diversity of our communities and that everyone feels recognized and celebrated. This year’s Black History Month theme, “Reclaiming Our Narratives,” provides an opportunity for publishers and retailers to genuinely engage with Black culture, amplify underrepresented voices, and expand representation within their offerings.

Why Black History Month Matters

Black History Month is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of Black individuals across various sectors. Historically, greeting cards have not always reflected the diversity of the people who purchase them, especially in relation to Black culture and experiences. This is our chance, as publishers and retailers, to change that.

By prioritizing inclusivity, we can ensure that greeting cards are not just products but tools for cultural expression, allowing people to see themselves and their stories represented in meaningful ways.

AfroTouch Design’s Approach to Black History Month

At AfroTouch Design, we have embraced this year’s “Reclaiming Our Narratives” theme with our Culture & Pride Collection. Our focus has been on designs that celebrate Black pride, identity, and cultural heritage through positive affirmations. These cards resonate with customers seeking authentic and empowering representations of their culture.

We have also partnered with retailers to ensure our Black History Month collection is accessible, demonstrating that celebrating Black culture through greeting cards is both impactful and commercially viable.

Publishers and Retailers Can Get Involved

  • Support Black Creators: Collaborate with Black artists, designers, and businesses to create products that reflect Black culture in a genuine and innovative way.
  • Curate Themed Collections: Develop collections celebrating Black excellence and cultural pride, offering consumers cards that genuinely resonate.
  • Partner with Black Organizations: Consider donating a portion of sales from Black History Month collections to Black-led organizations or community initiatives that uplift the Black community.
  • Host Engaging Events: Organize talks, workshops, or campaigns that educate your audience about Black culture and history while celebrating its contributions.
  • Year-Round Diversity: Commit to diversity beyond just Black History Month by incorporating inclusivity in your long-term product development and marketing strategies.

As a council member of the Greeting Card Association, I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusion throughout the industry. Black History Month, particularly with this year’s theme of “Reclaiming Our Narratives,” is an opportunity for publishers and retailers to genuinely engage with Black culture and build a more inclusive marketplace.

At AfroTouch Design, our mission is to ensure that Black stories and culture are reflected year-round in greeting cards. We encourage others in the industry to join us in this important work. Together, we can create a more inclusive future—one design at a time.
